What's the story

Google has released its first television commercial created entirely using generative artificial intelligence (AI). The ad, titled "Quick Getaway," is part of the company's "Just Ask Google" campaign. It features a turkey named Tom as the main character and showcases Google Search's AI Mode. The ad will be aired on TV starting today and will also be available on digital media and in movie theaters.

Campaign details

Ad shows turkey using Google search

The ad shows a generic Android phone and the Google app being used to launch AI Mode. The prompt reads: "I need to go somewhere with direct flights and NO Thanksgiving... leaving tomorrow." This leads to a list of cities, with Tom shown on a farm, boarding a plane, and at the pool. The ad doesn't carry an AI label as Google thinks consumers don't care if an ad was AI-generated.

Content strategy

Ad created by Google Creative Lab

While the ad doesn't carry an AI label, Google's YouTube upload does have the platform's "Altered or synthetic content" disclosure. The ad was created by the Google Creative Lab with its internal marketing group coming up with the concept, before deciding to create it with Veo 3 and other AI tools. A WSJ report notes that Veo has been used internally to conceptualize ads featuring people but Google hasn't released one with generated humans yet.
