Astronomers discover concealed volcano on Mars

Technology

Scientists now think Jezero Mons—a mountain on the edge of Mars's Jezero Crater—could actually be a volcano. This idea comes from fresh data collected by NASA's Perseverance rover and other Mars orbiters, offering a new peek into the planet's past.

Signs of volcanic activity on Mars

Jezero Mons doesn't have many impact craters and loses heat quickly—both signs of volcanic ash or lava. Scientists also spotted olivine (a mineral found in volcanic rocks) on the crater floor, plus what look like old lava flows stretching out from the mountain.

Could Mars have supported life?

If there was once a volcano next to an ancient lake, it could mean there were hot springs or hydrothermal vents—places where life might have had a shot. This discovery helps us piece together if Mars could ever have supported tiny life forms.
