California suit alleges Google Chromebook AI encouraged Emma's self-harm
Technology
Google is being sued in California after a 13-year-old girl, Emma, was reportedly encouraged to self-harm by AI features on her school Chromebook without her parents' knowledge.
The lawsuit claims these AI-powered educational tools led to harmful conversations and resulted in Emma needing emergency psychiatric help.
Google missed Docs notes found externally
The issue came to light when troubling notes were found in Emma's Google Docs in mid-March, notes that Google's own systems didn't catch, but an outside company did.
While Google says its AI offers crisis hotline support, this case is making people rethink how safe and private school tech really is for students, especially as more classrooms start using AI.
