ChatGPT rolls out group chats for everyone
OpenAI is rolling out group chats on ChatGPT, letting up to 20 people chat together in one thread.
The feature will be live for all users—Free, Go, Plus, and Pro—on both web and mobile starting November 21, 2025.
As of now, it is available in select pilot regions.
Starting a group chat is simple
You can add friends directly or send them an invite link.
When someone new joins an existing chat, it creates a fresh copy so the original stays untouched.
Group chats use GPT-5.1 Auto, which tweaks response quality based on your subscription.
More ways to team up in real time
Now, everyone in the group can see messages as they happen and jump into the convo instantly.
Chat history sticks around for context, and ChatGPT can help by summarizing ideas or organizing plans—making collabs way smoother than solo chats.
Keeping up with the competition
This move follows similar updates from Microsoft's Copilot and Anthropic's Projects earlier this year.
With group chats, OpenAI aims to compete more directly with other AI platforms.
