China now requires labels on all AI-generated content

Technology

China just made it official: anything created by AI—whether it's text, images, audio, or video—now has to be clearly labeled.
The new rules kicked in on September 1, 2025, and cover everything from memes and virtual scenes to deepfakes.
Platforms like Bilibili and Xiaohongshu have to check for these labels before letting content go live.

Why should you care?

This move is all about making the internet more trustworthy. By putting the responsibility on creators and platforms (not just users), China hopes to cut down on fake news, scams, and deepfake drama that can mess with public trust.
If companies don't follow the rules? Their content could get pulled or their licenses suspended.
Plus, over 30 big AI companies in Shanghai are teaming up to keep each other in check—setting a new global standard for how we handle AI-generated stuff online.
