Daily supplement may help older adults keep their brains sharp, study finds

Technology

A new study from King's College London suggests that taking a daily mix of prebiotics (inulin and FOS) with protein could boost memory and cognitive function in people over 60.
Researchers used memory tests linked to early Alzheimer's signs to track the effects.

How the study worked

The trial paired up 36 sets of twins—one got the supplement, the other a placebo—for 12 weeks.
Those on the prebiotic mix scored better on visual memory and learning tests compared to their siblings.

Gut health connection

Researchers found these supplements increased "good" gut bacteria like Bifidobacterium, hinting that supporting gut health might also support brain health as we age.

No muscle gains yet

While brains got a boost, muscle strength didn't improve much.
The team plans bigger studies to see if these early brain benefits hold up long term.
