Elon Musk's xAI is building a solar farm at its Memphis data center

Technology

Elon Musk's AI company, xAI, told city and county planners in Memphis last week about plans for a new solar farm next to its Colossus data center in Memphis.
The solar project will cover 88 acres and provide about 30 megawatts of power—just a small slice of the massive 400 megawatts the center needs to train its AI models.

Responding to pollution concerns and looking ahead

xAI faced criticism for running dozens of natural gas turbines without permits, which caused local air pollution and health worries in the Boxtown community.
Now, they've secured permits for fewer turbines through early 2027 and are teaming up with Seven States Power Company on an even bigger 100-megawatt solar project with battery storage, backed by a $414 million USDA loan.
It's part of their push toward cleaner energy.
