Giant squid eDNA detected off Nyinggulu coast after 25+ years
Technology
Scientists just found evidence of the elusive giant squid in Western Australian waters for the first time in over 25 years.
Using environmental DNA (eDNA) collected off the Nyinggulu coast, researchers on the ship Falkor picked up traces of this massive creature (think up to 13 meters long and eyes as big as dinner plates).
Team detected eDNA from 226 species
The expedition didn't stop at squids: the team detected eDNA from 226 species, including rarely seen animals like Cuvier's beaked whale, pygmy sperm whale, sleeper shark, and faceless cusk eel.
Some findings might even be new to science.
