Henry Xie, a high school student from Portland, has developed a simple method to help smaller AIs (think the ones on your phone) respond with more empathy, without requiring the massive computing power of large models.
His project is part of the Regeneron Science Talent Search and could make caring AI available on everyday devices.
Small models mimicked ChatGPT empathy 90%
He trains small language models by showing them examples of empathetic replies from bigger AIs like ChatGPT, then uses special prompts so they can mimic those responses.
In tests, these upgraded models gave more empathetic answers in at least 90% of cases.
This could mean more empathetic AI tools that are more widely available, even on devices that aren't super powerful.
