How Google's DeepMind is changing hurricane forecasts
Google's DeepMind has rolled out a new AI-powered hurricane forecasting model that predicts storms faster and more accurately than older systems.
Launched in June 2025, it uses over 45 years of cyclone data and runs on regular computers within minutes—spotting dangerous storm intensification earlier so people have more time to get ready.
Why does this matter now?
This past hurricane season, DeepMind's model beat out top systems like the US Global Forecast System.
For Hurricane Melissa, it had the lowest track errors at every stage and nailed the tricky prediction of its slow path before hitting Jamaica as a Category 5 storm.
What's cool about it?
DeepMind can generate up to 50 different forecast scenarios for up to 15 days ahead, covering where storms might form, how strong they'll get, and their size.
Its five-day predictions are about 140km closer to reality than traditional models—making weather alerts smarter and giving communities a better shot at staying safe.
