India approves 20 indigenous foundation model proposals under IndiaAI mission
India just gave the go-ahead to 20 indigenous foundation model proposals as part of its IndiaAI Mission.
Announced by Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Jitin Prasada, these include everything from massive multimodal systems to smaller language models, and developers keep their rights.
Standout projects? Sarvam AI's giant 105-billion-parameter model, BharatGen's multilingual system, and Avataar AI's video generator.
IndiaAI subsidizes compute for 237 projects
The mission is also backing 237 projects with subsidized computing power, so startups and researchers can actually build cool stuff without breaking the bank.
A high-performance AI compute system is being set up in Delhi.
Plus, with India now ranked third globally for AI competitiveness (Stanford says so!), it looks like the country is really stepping up its tech game.
