India's ISRO hands launch and satellite roles to industry
Big shift for India's space scene: ISRO is handing over the job of making launch vehicles to private companies and public sector undertakings, and regular satellites to private companies.
IN-SPACe Chairman Dr. Pawan Goenka explained that ISRO will now focus on research, advanced technology, and scientific missions instead.
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited wins SSLV technology
The change is already in motion: Hindustan Aeronautics Limited just got the SSLV technology after a bidding process, and PSLV and LVM3 are also headed toward privatization too (only private firms can join in).
So far, 120 ISRO technologies have been transferred to private players. Plus, a new launch center is also being planned to be run by a private operator soon, all part of India's big plan to grow its space economy from $8 billion to $44 billion by 2033.
