This super-fast shift, spotted by a collaborative team led by the Institute of Science Tokyo, alongside researchers from Tohoku University and the Nagoya Institute of Technology, revealed a hidden intermediate phase we didn't know existed.

The team used ultra-short laser pulses to watch electrons reorganize before atoms even moved.
Within those blink-and-you'll-miss-it 30 femtoseconds, the material showed off a new electronic state that quickly settled into a stable form.
Why care? This could lead to insanely fast optical switches and memory for our devices.
As Assistant Professor Tadahiko Ishikawa put it, these findings give us a clear roadmap for designing smart materials capable of responding almost instantaneously to light signals.
