Japan's Digital Agency may have exposed personal data of about 246,000 people, including public servants and contractors.
The breach happened through a virtual private network (VPN) vulnerability and was spotted on June 25 when a maintenance and operation account was used to access many files.
Agency warns of phishing risk
The agency says sensitive details like My Number IDs, bank account numbers, or pension numbers weren't part of the leak.
Still, stolen contact information could be used for phishing scams.
Affected people are being notified and urged to stay alert for suspicious messages asking for personal or financial information.
Security experts are helping with the investigation.
