Meet Hangxing No. 1: The robot now directing traffic in China

Technology

Hangzhou has just rolled out Hangxing No. 1, a humanoid AI robot that's taking charge at one of the city's busiest intersections.
Launched in December 2025, this 1.8-meter-tall robot is part of a pilot project to make traffic smoother and safer, working right alongside human officers.

How it works—and what's next

Hangxing No. 1 uses high-def cameras and sensors to spot jaywalkers, helmetless riders, and anyone breaking the rules.
It can signal "stop" or "go," give verbal warnings, and even sync with traffic lights.
Upgrades are already in the works—soon it might chat with people using advanced language models, making interactions even more helpful.
This move follows similar robots popping up in other Chinese cities as tech keeps changing how we get around.
