Meta sued for allegedly pirating adult films to train AI

Technology

Meta—the company behind Facebook and Instagram—is facing a lawsuit from two media companies who say Meta illegally downloaded about 2,400 adult films to help train its AI, possibly for a project called Movie Gen.
The plaintiffs want $359 million in damages.

Who's responsible for the downloads is the big question

The lawsuit claims Meta used these movies for AI training, pointing to 47 IP addresses tied to the downloads.
Meta says the numbers don't add up—they argue just 22 downloads per year per IP looks more like personal use than some big corporate project.
Plus, Meta points out that nearly 100 of those downloads came from the home of a contractor's dad, not directly from the company.
Now it's up to the court to sort out who's responsible.
