Meta sues UK regulator Ofcom over Online Safety Act fees
Technology
Meta (the company behind Instagram and Facebook) is taking the U.K.'s media regulator, Ofcom, to court. The fight? How much Meta should pay under the new Online Safety Act.
Ofcom wants big tech firms to pay fees based on their global revenue. Meta is objecting to fees and any penalties that could be levied on companies in future, calculated on that basis.
Ofcom says fees follow law
Ofcom stands by its math, saying it just follows what the law requires.
"We will robustly defend our reasoning and decisions," an Ofcom spokesperson said.
This case could shape how much tech giants pay, and how online safety rules get enforced in the UK going forward.
