Meta's AI astonishes with Harry Potter memorisation

Meta's latest AI, Llama 3.1, has been caught memorizing large sections of famous books—like nearly half of "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone."
Earlier versions barely remembered anything by comparison, but this one can accurately recreate long passages much more often.

TL;DR

AI also memorized parts of 'The Hobbit' and '1984'

Llama 3.1 didn't stop at one book—it also memorized big parts of "The Hobbit" and "1984."
The more popular the book, the more likely it was to get memorized.
When given part of a passage, the AI could fill in the rest with significant accuracy after a few tries.

Should AI be allowed to use creative works?

With AIs like Llama 3.1 able to remember so much copyrighted material, there are growing concerns about how these models are trained—and whether authors' rights are being protected.
The study suggests it might be time for new rules on how AI uses creative works.
