New wolf snake species found in India—named after Steve Irwin

Technology

Scientists just discovered a new wolf snake on Great Nicobar Island and named it Lycodon irwini, as a tribute to the legendary wildlife expert Steve Irwin.
This glossy black-and-brown snake can reach up to 1.2 meters long and was described by researchers from Pondicherry University, Max Planck Institute for Biology (Germany), and Pune (India).

Why it matters

Lycodon irwini might already be endangered—it's only been spotted four times and lives in the island's dense forests.
Researchers say we need more studies to understand and protect this rare species, especially since the Nicobar Islands have such unique wildlife.
Naming it after Steve Irwin is a nod to his passion for conservation—something this little-known snake could really use right now.
