OpenAI's ChatGPT gets a brain upgrade: Meet GPT-5.1
OpenAI just rolled out GPT-5.1, an upgrade to its popular AI model. You now get two options: Instant for speedy, chatty replies, and Thinking for tougher tasks like math or logic problems.
Both versions are rolling out first to paid users (Pro, Plus, Go, and Business), with free and logged-out users to follow.
Enterprise and Edu plans will receive a seven-day early access period (off by default) before GPT-5.1 becomes the default for everyone.
Instant or thinking
GPT-5.1 adapts how much brainpower it uses based on your question—quick answers when you want them, deeper thinking when you need it.
Instant is all about fast conversation; Thinking steps up for multi-step planning or complex reasoning.
Six chat styles and more accurate responses
You can now pick from six chat styles—Default, Friendly, Efficient, Professional, Candid, or Quirky—and even control how many emojis show up in your convo.
Plus: It follows instructions better and makes fewer mistakes in code or facts.
Overall? ChatGPT feels more accurate and personal than ever before.
