Recreational drugs like cocaine, cannabis increase stroke risk: Study
A new review (meta-analysis) just out finds that use of recreational drugs like amphetamines, cocaine, or even cannabis is associated with a substantially higher risk of stroke.
Amphetamines top the list with a 122% higher risk, cocaine users face a 96% jump, and cannabis increases stroke chances by 37%.
Stroke is 1 of the leading causes of death globally
Stroke causes more than seven million deaths annually worldwide; the review found recreational drug use is associated with an increased risk of stroke.
These drugs mess with your blood vessels and blood pressure (amphetamines and cocaine), speed up artery damage (cocaine), or help clots form (cannabis).
With recreational drug use on the rise worldwide, experts say spreading awareness and cutting back is key to protecting yourself from one of the world's leading causes of death and disability.
