Revolutionary solid-state battery in production
Ion Storage Systems, a US battery maker, just started rolling out solid-state batteries at their Maryland plant.
These next-gen batteries—backed by the US Energy Department—promise to last about 50% longer and charge up faster than typical lithium-ion ones.
Plus, they're designed to be much safer by cutting down on fire risks that come with older battery tech.
How are these batteries different from lithium-ion ones?
Instead of using liquid or gel inside, solid-state batteries have a solid core, which means more energy packed in and less chance of overheating or catching fire.
Ion Storage Systems uses a special porous ceramic in their design, making it possible to produce these safer batteries using existing factories.
Early tests—even with the Department of Defense—are looking pretty promising for this new tech.
