What's the story

At its annual Roblox Developer Conference (RDC), the popular gaming platform unveiled a series of new features. These include new game-creation tools, expanded non-player character (NPC) capabilities, and cross-platform availability for games. The company is also introducing a dedicated Roblox Card and Roblox Wallet for creators. The updates are aimed at simplifying game development and expanding accessibility across different platforms.

Tool expansion

Expansion of 'Build' generative AI tool

Roblox is expanding its generative AI game creation tool, "Build," which was first announced in July. The feature lets users create games using natural language prompts.

Initially available only in New Zealand, it is now being expanded to Serbia and Singapore.

The company is also bringing Build to desktop for big-screen creation, adding a new asset library and iterative control.

A prompt-based scene-generation feature will be added later this year, extending its capabilities within Roblox Studio.

Accessibility boost

App-based gaming and enhanced NPC capabilities

Roblox is also making strides in enhancing game accessibility.

Creators will soon be able to publish their games as standalone apps on mobile, PC, and consoles, with Roblox serving as the underlying game engine.

By the end of this year, players will also be able to join a game via a link in their browser.

The platform is adding new capabilities to NPCs, including playtesting features for games later this year.

User experience

Offline mode and personalized game recommendations

Roblox is introducing an offline mode for games, letting players continue their gaming experience even in low network areas.

A new Friends chat tab that follows players across the game with voice typing support is also being added.

The platform's discovery algorithm will recommend shorter-format games to younger users and longer-playtime ones to older users, further enhancing user experience on the platform.

Innovation and finance

Roblox's new financial products for creators

Roblox is bringing tools to create 2D games with an orthographic camera, animated image containers, and direct sprite-sheet import for animation.

The platform's Moments vertical feed will soon let players tap on any avatar in a clip and purchase items.

Since 2013, game makers have earned over $5 billion on Roblox. Now, the company is launching financial products like the Roblox Wallet for creators to manage their earnings effectively.
