Samsung is mass producing 5x optical zoom camera for smartphones

    What's the story

In today's smartphone wars, where the camera is seemingly the only battlefield left, Samsung is upping the ante against rivals like Huawei and Apple.

The South Korean tech giant has started mass producing a 5x optical zoom sensor which is expected to debut on the upcoming Galaxy Note 10.

Recently, Samsung also launched the world's first 64MP mobile camera.

    Here's all about it.

    Details

Everything to know about Samsung's 5x zoom camera module

Samsung has developed an "ultra-slim" camera module with 5x optical Zoom capabilities. Impressively, this module is only 5mm thick as against 6mm thickness on the standard 2x optical zoom sensors.

This slim form factor has been accomplished by using a periscope like setup that we have already seen on the likes of OPPO Reno 10X Zoom and Huawei P30 Pro.

Separately, Samsung also launched world's first 64MP mobile camera

Earlier this month, Samsung launched a new image sensor with the highest resolution ever on a mobile camera.

Dubbed as Samsung ISOCELL Bright GW1, the 64MP image sensor uses 0.8μm-sized pixels - same as the existing 48MP sensors.

The GW1 sensor uses pixel-merging Tetracell technology and remosaic algorithm to produce bright 16MP images in low-light environments and highly-detailed 64MP shots in brighter settings.

    Possibility #1

On which phones will these cameras debut

Now, we know Samsung is working on the next iteration of its phablet flagship, Galaxy Note 10.

And one of the possibilities is that either both the 5x zoom camera and the 64MP image sensor or one of them would debut on this flagship.

However, this presumption is contrary to rumors which claimed Note 10 would borrow the quad-camera setup of S10 5G model.

    Possibility #2

Samsung's "most creative" smartphone may get these new camera sensors

If these image sensors don't debut on the Galaxy Note 10, it is possible that Samsung's "most creative" phone will come equipped with the 5x optical zoom and 64MP sensors.

According to reputed tipster Ice Universe, Samsung is working on a new phone with an "aggressively curved display" and that it will launch sometime in the second half of 2019.
