Scientists confirm Colobus congoensis monkey in DRC after DNA tests
Scientists have finally confirmed a new monkey species in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, almost two decades after it was first spotted.
Called Colobus congoensis, or Likweli by locals, this primate stands out with spiky black fur and orange markings around its mouth.
DNA tests show it split from its closest relative about 5 million years ago, making it a pretty unique find.
Researchers urge endangered listing for Likweli
Even though this discovery is exciting, researchers are worried: Likweli's small population faces habitat loss and hunting.
The team wants it listed as endangered to help protect it.
As study co-corresponding author and current Ph.D. student Junior Amboko put it, "This discovery is both exciting and deeply personal, highlighting the extraordinary biodiversity of my homeland and how much remains undocumented."
