Semaglutide (Wegovy, Ozempic) boosts heart health—even without weight loss
Turns out, semaglutide—the main ingredient in Wegovy and Ozempic—does more than help with weight loss.
New research shows it also protects your heart, even if you don't lose much weight.
Originally designed for diabetes, this medication is now making waves for its independent heart benefits, according to a study published in The Lancet.
What the big trial found
In the SELECT trial led by Professor John Deanfield at University College London, over 17,000 adults with heart disease took semaglutide or a placebo for three years.
The results? A 20% drop in major heart problems like strokes and heart attacks—regardless of how much weight people lost.
Other studies suggest early improvements in blood vessel function and cholesterol levels, suggesting semaglutide's heart perks kick in sooner than expected.
