South Korea fines SK Telecom for data breach

SK Telecom just got fined by the South Korean government after a cyberattack leaked personal info of nearly 27 million users.
The breach, revealed in April, has pushed officials to demand tighter security from the telecom giant.

SK Telecom's stock takes a hit

The news sent SK Telecom's stock down 5.6%.
To make up for the breach, the company is investing over $500 million in better data protection and offering a 50% discount on August subscription fees to 24 million customers, plus free USIM card swaps at thousands of stores.
Because of these costs, SK has lowered its revenue forecast for next year and promised regular security reviews—while top execs have publicly apologized and pledged to do better.
