Spot enormous 'X' and 'V' on Moon's surface on July 2

On June 2, keep an eye on the first quarter moon—it'll show off rare 'X' and 'V' shapes formed by sunlight hitting certain craters right where lunar night meets day.
This cool effect, called clair-obscur, really highlights the moon's rugged surface.

TL;DR

Where to look

The 'X' shows up near the Bianchini, Purbach, and La Caille craters (about 25° south of the equator), while the 'V' appears close to Ukert crater (around 10° north).
You can catch both shapes from about four hours before until just after the first quarter moon at 11:41pm EDT.

Viewing tips

If you're in the northern hemisphere, binoculars work—but a telescope with at least a 6-inch lens gives you a sharper view.
The letters only pop out for a short window as they move into sunlight.
For best contrast between light and shadow (and your best shot at spotting them), try watching near moonset.
