Supreme Court wants new rules for online content creators
The Supreme Court has told the Centre to come up with clear rules for user-generated content (UGC) within four weeks, after talking to the public.
The judges said an independent panel—with tech experts and legal minds—should be set up to provide independent oversight of content moderation and guidelines.
They pointed out that current self-regulation isn't working, and any new rules should block harmful stuff but still protect free speech.
Why should you care?
The government is looking at rating content by age (like U, U/A, and A) and using Aadhaar-based checks for adult material.
There's also talk of updating digital media rules to tackle issues like obscenity and deepfakes.
With harmful content spreading fast online—especially risking kids and vulnerable groups—these changes aim to make the internet safer without killing creativity or expression.
