This smart cane can guide the visually impaired around cities

Technology

Seattle's Glidance is currently beta testing Glide, a smart, wheeled walking stick made to help visually impaired people get around cities more confidently.
Glide offers two modes: one provides turn-by-turn directions using platforms like Google Maps or a preprogrammed route, while the other—currently the main focus of development—lets users explore freely but still keeps them safe with built-in guidance.

Glide runs over 6 hours per charge

Glide uses advanced cameras and sensors to spot obstacles, doors, and stairs.
It runs over six hours per charge and includes a speaker, mic, and haptic feedback in the handle.
Currently in beta testing around Seattle, Glide is set to launch commercially in spring 2026 at $1,499 plus a $30 monthly subscription for updates and AI features.
