UK watchdog may compel Google to present rival search options

The UK's competition watchdog is planning new rules that could shake up how we search online.
By labeling Google as having "Strategic Market Status," the CMA could require Google to add "choice screens" on Chrome and Android—basically letting you pick your default search engine or AI assistant, instead of being stuck with Google by default.

TL;DR

CMA's proposed changes and Google's response

Google currently handles over 90% of searches in the UK and makes billions from ads, so these changes are a big deal for anyone who uses the internet.
The CMA also wants fairer search rankings and more transparency about how publishers' content is used in AI features.
While Google says these rules might hurt its business, the move could mean more options and control for users, plus better chances for smaller competitors to grow.
Final decisions are expected by October 2025.
