Ultra-processed foods harm every organ, warns new study

Technology

A major new Lancet review says ultra-processed foods (UPFs)—think packaged snacks and sugary drinks—are linked to harm in every major organ system of the human body.
The research, led by 43 global experts, looked at over 100 long-term studies and found UPFs are associated with increased risk of chronic diseases and early death.

UPFs linked to chronic diseases and early death

Out of 104 studies, 92 showed that eating lots of UPFs is tied to more chronic illnesses and dying younger.
In the UK and US, more than half of what people eat is ultra-processed; for kids and lower-income groups, it's closer to 80%.
These foods are designed for taste but usually lack nutrients.

Big companies play a big role—and there are ways to push back

The report calls out big food corporations for pushing UPFs hard while blocking health regulations.
Experts suggest things like clearer food labels, banning UPF sales in schools and hospitals, and cutting down on ads aimed at kids.
Brazil's school meal program is already showing how these changes can work.
