Virginia startup wants to beam solar power from space—raises $20 million to try it

Technology

Overview Energy, a young startup from Ashburn, Virginia, just scored $20 million in seed funding from big names like Lowercarbon Capital and Prime Movers Lab.
Their mission? Build satellites that collect sunlight in space and beam it down to Earth as safe, low-intensity near-infrared light.

How does their tech work?

Instead of letting solar farms sit idle when the sun isn't shining, Overview's satellites would send energy down using wavelengths similar to those in fiber optics and security cameras.
This means solar power could be delivered even at night or across continents within minutes—a big step toward reliable clean energy.

What's next?

Last month, Overview made headlines by wirelessly sending high-power energy from a moving plane to ground panels over 5km away.
They're aiming for a pilot test in orbit by 2028 and hope to scale up for megawatt operations by 2030.
