Waymo's driverless rides now include freeway trips
Technology
Waymo just began rolling out driverless freeway rides to select riders in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Phoenix—the first of its kind in the US.
Now you can get across suburbs or even between cities way faster, with some trips cut by up to half the time.
Waymo has expanded its service area
The service area now stretches all the way to San Jose (that's over a 260-square-mile area), plus there's curbside pick-up at San Jose Mineta International Airport—joining its existing Phoenix Sky Harbor option.
Waymo says it spent over a year testing on closed tracks and with employees before letting riders on board, coordinating with safety officials like California Highway Patrol to keep things safe.
