WeatherNext predicted Hurricane Melissa's Category 5 landfall 5 days early
Google's WeatherNext AI predicted Hurricane Melissa would explode into a Category 5 storm and hit Jamaica, a full five days before it happened.
Teaming up with the US National Hurricane Center, or NHC, Google's WeatherNext AI gave people and officials precious time to get ready.
WeatherNext is backed by Google DeepMind and Google Research.
WeatherNext runs 50 scenarios per storm
WeatherNext stands out because it is trained on decades of global weather data alongside specialized datasets covering extreme tropical cyclones, helping it spot when storms will suddenly get way stronger, something that has been tough for meteorologists.
It runs 50 different scenarios for each storm, giving experts more options to plan for.
The NHC even credited WeatherNext in its 2025 report as one of the top-performing individual models for forecasting both hurricane intensity and storm tracks, providing valuable support for expert decision-making.
