Anil Kumble's balls didn't turn like Shane Warne's or spin like Muttiah Muralitharan's, but when he ended his Test career in 2008, he had 619 wickets, only behind Muralitharan and Warne. A fierce competitor on the field and as humble off it, Kumble is what one would describe as the perfect ambassador for cricket. He was nicknamed “Jumbo.” Making his Test and ODI debuts in 1990, he became a regular in the Indian team after his performance in the 1992 Irani Trophy. A bowler who always looked to add more weapons to his arsenal, Kumble was no home track bully. In a career full of great bowling performances, his arguably best performance came against Pakistan in 1999 when he won 10 wickets in an innings. 'Wisden Almanack' named that pas the second-best bowling performance of all time. Kumble retired from ODI cricket after India's first-round exit from the 2007 World Cup. He had 337 ODI wickets to his name and was the first Indian spinner to take 300 wickets in Tests. After Rahul Dravid's resignation, Kumble was named the captain of the Indian Test team in 2007. A year after that, he retired from Test cricket, too.
