Former Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl has impressed Rangers chiefs during the recruitment process and is still in the running for the job. Rohl, who left the Owls in July, was approached by Rangers before appointing Russell Martin. After 123 days in charge, Martin was sacked following a 1-1 draw at Falkirk, leaving Rangers eighth in the Scottish Premiership.

Gerrard led Rangers to a Scottish Premiership title in 2021 before leaving for Aston Villa. However, he was sacked by Villa after less than a year in charge. He then took up a position at Saudi Pro League club Al Ettifaq but left after 18 months. Despite the recent talks with Rangers, both sides have left the door open for future possibilities.

Back in January 2025, Gerrard parted ways with Al-Ettifaq, mutually. Gerrard's exit came after an 18-month-long stint at the Saudi Arabian club. The former Liverpool captain joined Al-Ettifaq in July 2023 and signed a two-year contract extension in January 2024, intending to stay until 2027. Gerrard managed Al-Ettifaq across 59 matches in all competitions. He enjoyed 23 wins in addition to clocking 16 draws and suffering 20 defeats. His win percentage was 39.
