Australian superstar Steve Smith claimed the spot after a defining Ashes 2019 series.
Smith scored 774 runs against England to boss the show.
However, Kohli regained lost ground in the second Test match against the Proteas with a record-breaking 254*.
Kohli's heroics helped India seal the Pune Test match.

After the match, Kohli said he enjoys scoring runs.
"I'm just happy to be where I am. Putting the team in a commanding position is the only thing I strive for," Kohli said.
"Of course I enjoy scoring runs, but if they come in a winning cause, nothing like it."
