IPL: 'No one wants to be benched,' says Arjun Tendulkar
What's the story
Arjun Tendulkar, the son of Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, is expected to start for Lucknow Super Giants in the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL). The fast-bowling all-rounder joined Mumbai Indians (MI) in 2021 and played just five matches. Now, he hopes for more chances with LSG after being traded in by LSG last November. In a recent Shubhankar Mishra podcast, Arjun opened up on his limited IPL experience.
Initial struggles
Three wickets in his debut season
Arjun made his IPL debut in 2023 for MI against Kolkata Knight Riders. He played four matches and took three wickets. The all-rounder was retained by the five-time champions in 2024, where he played a solitary game. Arjun was then traded to LSG at his existing fee of ₹30 lakh ahead of the 2026 season.
Career transition
Arjun on sitting out
Despite the lack of opportunities, Arjun remained optimistic about his performance when given a chance. "Who doesn't feel that? No one wants to sit on the bench. But we want to work hard and perform when we get a chance," he said in the podcast. Arjun, a left-arm medium-pacer, has 35 wickets in T20 cricket. He also has a First-Class ton to his name.
Rule debate
'Pick 11 and play': Arjun Tendulkar on impact player rule
Arjun also spoke about the controversial Impact Player rule in IPL, which has drawn criticism from several Indian internationals. He said, "Pick 11 and play. Because in international T20s, and in any other league, there is no Impact Player. So, I am personally against the Impact Player rule." His views echo those of many senior Indian players who have also criticized this regulation.
New beginnings
Willing to bat anywhere in the order for LSG
Despite not being a guaranteed starter, Arjun is willing to bat at any position given. He said, "Our middle order is also very powerful. T20 is a game where anyone can beat anyone, so I think we have a bright chance to do well in this tournament." The all-rounder hopes his time with LSG will give him more chances to showcase his skills on the field.
