What's the story

Elon Musk's social media platform X (formerly Twitter) has introduced a new feature that shows the country of origin for user accounts. The update has created a stir in both MAGA and Democrat circles as many accounts that appeared to be US-based are actually operated from abroad. The feature can be accessed by clicking on the 'Joined' tab on a profile page.

Account origins

Political influencers found to be operating from abroad

The new feature has revealed that several accounts pushing political agendas in the US are actually based outside the country. For instance, an account called 'MAGA NATION' with over 392,000 followers is operated from Eastern Europe. Similarly, 'Dark Maga' with over 15,000 followers is based in Thailand while 'MAGA Scope,' which boasts over 51,000 followers, operates out of Nigeria. 'America First,' an account with over 67,000 followers is based in Bangladesh.

Feature impact

X's feature exposes foreign political influencers

The new feature from X has also exposed several anti-Trump accounts. For instance, 'Republicans against Trump,' an account that pushes politics against MAGA, was found to be operating from Austria. The location now shows the US but X warns it may not be accurate due to VPN usage. Another account posting pro-Israel content, 'Mariana Times,' with over 78,000 followers was discovered to be based in India.

User responses

Reactions to X's new feature

The revelation of foreign origins for several political accounts has drawn reactions from users on both sides of the aisle. MAGA Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna said, "All of these pretend "pro-America" accounts that were pushing infighting within Maga are literally foreign grifters. I'm telling you, the foreign opp is real and so are the bot accounts." Alexis Wilkins, girlfriend of FBI director Kash Patel, emphasized the need to recognize that "the enemy is outside of the house."
