BMW recalls electric models over power loss issue
BMW is recalling 70,852 electric cars because of a software glitch that can suddenly shut off the drive motor while you're on the road.
This affects i4, iX SUVs, i7 sedans, and i5 sedans made between 2022 and 2025.
The bug triggers a high-voltage system shutdown about 15-20 seconds after a warning pops up on your dashboard—definitely not ideal mid-drive.
Breakdown of affected vehicles
The recall covers over 35,000 i4s (including eDrive35 and eDrive40), more than 25,000 iX SUVs, around 5,400 i7 sedans, and nearly 4,700 i5 sedans.
So far there have been warranty claims but no reported crashes or injuries—which is some relief.
BMW offers free software updates
BMW started a voluntary recall on June 6. They're offering free software updates either over-the-air or at dealerships to fix things up.
Owners will get instructions by August 5, 2025. It's another reminder that even cars run on code now—and when tech hiccups happen, quick fixes matter!
