EU softens car emissions target: 90% cut by 2035, not 100%

Auto

The EU just proposed a new plan for cleaner cars—aiming for a 90% drop in CO2 emissions from new cars by 2035 instead of the full ban on gas engines they talked about before.
Carmakers can cover the last 10% using greener materials like low-carbon steel, e-fuels, or biofuels.
There's also a big push to support battery makers.

Why should you care?

This move comes as EV sales in Europe slow down—just 16% of new cars sold this year were fully electric, way behind China.
The EU hopes these changes will keep climate goals on track while making it easier for automakers and buyers to adapt.
Officials say they're still committed to being climate-neutral by 2050, but some worry this softer target could slow down progress on electrification.
The plan still needs approval from member countries and parliament.
