Experts urge clear rules for self-driving cars in India

Auto

India wants to roll out advanced driver-assistance (ADAS) tech by 2030 and Level 3 and Level 4 autonomous vehicles in select urban zones and controlled corridors by 2040, but experts say there's a big catch: the country still doesn't have proper rules or safety procedures for these vehicles.
The International Road Federation (IRF) is now calling for a solid regulatory framework so AVs can actually work on India's busy roads.

Why it matters: safety, laws, and the road ahead

Right now, old laws like the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988 don't address self-driving tech at all.
At a recent IRF event, Professor P Rajalakshmi from IIT Hyderabad highlighted how important it is to have clear guidelines to keep people safe and make sure companies are accountable.
With most cars worldwide still at basic automation levels, India's step-by-step plan needs updated laws to match its ambitious goals.
