Waymo targets NYC for autonomous vehicle testing
Waymo, Google parent Alphabet's self-driving car company, is bringing its autonomous vehicles to Manhattan for testing next month—pending city approval.
Each car will have a trained specialist on board to keep things safe as they navigate New York's famously hectic streets.
TL;DR
No full driverless service just yet
Waymo isn't rolling out a full driverless service here just yet. They're hoping to launch ride-hailing without human drivers someday, but that would need new state laws.
For now, their 1,500-car fleet is busy giving over 250,000 rides a week in cities like San Francisco and Phoenix—so NYC could be next if all goes well.
