Google withdraws EU antitrust complaint against Microsoft's cloud practices
What's the story
Google has withdrawn its EU antitrust complaint against Microsoft over cloud computing practices. The decision comes just a week after EU regulators launched an investigation into whether Microsoft should be subject to rules aimed at curbing its power in this sector. Last year, Google had filed the complaint with the European Commission, accusing Microsoft of anti-competitive practices that allegedly forced customers to stick with its Azure cloud platform.
Official statement
Google's response to withdrawal
Commenting on the decision, Giorgia Abeltino, Senior Director for Google Cloud Europe, said in a blog post that they are withdrawing the complaint "in light of the recent announcement that the EC will assess problematic practices affecting the cloud sector under a separate process." She further added that they are still working with policymakers, customers and regulators across EU and UK to advocate for choice and openness in cloud market.
Ongoing probe
EU's investigation into cloud sector
The European Commission, the EU's competition enforcer, is investigating whether certain features of the cloud sector are strengthening the market power of Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services. The probes are expected to be completed within a year. If these services meet the criteria, they could be designated as gatekeepers under the EU's Digital Markets Act.
