India's digital spending keeps climbing after Diwali

Business

Unlike past years when spending usually dips after Diwali, India's digital payments are still on the rise.
In November 2024 (up to November 21), people made digital transactions worth an average of ₹96,017 crore every day—up from October's numbers—showing the inclusion of online spending across things like debt payments and investments.

UPI leads the way as more people shop digitally

What's driving this? More folks are buying electronics, groceries, and eating out using digital payments.
Electronics purchases through UPI jumped 25% year-on-year in October, and grocery spends hit ₹76,073 crore.
With the wedding season in November and December, experts think this momentum will last.
UPI is at the heart of it all—making up 94% of transaction value in November—and its popularity is growing fast even in smaller cities.
