Major Delhi shopping hubs to remain shut today
In a bid to support the protesting traders against the mass sealing drive, at least 15 popular shopping hubs of Delhi will remain shut on Saturday. Major markets like Connaught Place, Khan Market, Lajpat Nagar, Chandni Chowk, Karol Bagh and Defence Colony Market will remain shut on day two of the 48-hour shutdown called by the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT). Here's more.
The traders are protesting against the Delhi Municipal Corporation's mass sealing drive on major shopping complexes that are allegedly using residential areas for commercial purposes without paying conversion charges. Praveen Khandelwal of CAIT said, "Almost 25,000 markets will be closed. Protest marches against Delhi sealing would be taken out by businessmen in around 500 markets. The ongoing sealing is very harmful to our economy."
Urging to stop the sealing drive, the CAIT said they will extend the strike for the third day if the sealed shops are not reopened. The sealing drive took a political turn after Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal accused BJP leaders behind the drive. To provide relief to traders hit by the sealing drive, the DDA on Friday approved changes to the city's Master Plan.
