Chile's "A Fantastic Woman" took home the Oscar for Best Foreign Language film trumping front-runner "The Square" from Sweden. Director Sebastian Lelio accepted the award, along with the female lead of the film, transgender star Daniela Vega, whom he lauded for her critically-acclaimed performance in the movie. In his speech, Lelio thanked a "lifetime of friends, artistes". "I share this with you all," he added.
The plot
Details about the movie
The plot follows Vega's character Marina, who grieves the death of her love, Orlando. After his death is investigated, it comes to be known that she is a transgender woman and is shunned by her lover's family because of her gender identity. How Marina grapples with the situation at hand and becomes a woman in a tumultuous journey is the story of the film.
