What's the story

Director Rajkumar Hirani recently revealed that the sequel to his 2009 blockbuster film 3 Idiots will delve into the lives of its beloved characters after a gap of 15-20 years. In an exclusive interview with THR India, he said, "I'm still working on that script." "There is a lot of work left. It's primarily about what happens to these characters 15-20 years later."

Character development

Hirani on the sequel's focus

Hirani further explained that the sequel will not focus on college life but rather on the personal lives of the characters. He said, "They are married and have children now. They are experiencing a midlife crisis, and so we will have to see, now what next?" The original film was a poignant critique of India's cutthroat academic culture and encouraged viewers to follow their dreams.

Sequel's message

Sequel will have an important message

When asked if the sequel will also have a strong message like its predecessor, Hirani replied in the affirmative. He said, "Of course," adding, "A big one!" The original film starred Aamir Khan as Phunsukh Wangdu (Rancho), R Madhavan as Farhan, and Sharman Joshi as Raju. It also starred Kareena Kapoor Khan and Boman Irani.

Khan had earlier confirmed sequel was underway

Earlier this year, Khan had confirmed that a sequel to 3 Idiots was in the works. He said, "The script still needs some work, but the story itself is really good, unusual, with the same humor as the first film." The sequel will reportedly pick up 10 years after the events of the original film and will feature Khan reprising his role as Rancho.
