Miss India Earth winner converts back to Hinduism, alleges abuse
What's the story
Sayali Surve, the winner of Miss India Earth 2019, has converted back to Hinduism after alleging harassment in her interfaith marriage. Hailing from Pimpri-Chinchwad near Pune, Surve now lives in Mumbai. Surve had married businessman Aatif Tase from Mira-Bhayandar in 2017, though some reports say 2019, despite opposition from her family. She converted to Islam at the time of marriage. Her name was also reportedly changed to Ateja (or Ateza) Tase.
Allegations
Surve claimed she faced mental, physical harassment
Surve later alleged that she faced mental and physical harassment after the wedding. Speaking to the media, Surve alleged that she was also pressured to change her religion. "Marrying Aatif Tase was the biggest mistake of my life," she said. Surve said she endured the difficult situation for several years, mainly for her children.
Conversion
She underwent a purification ritual
With the support of some Hindu organizations, a purification ritual was conducted in Pimpri-Chinchwad that included traditional Vedic ceremonies such as havan and chanting of mantras. Following the ceremony, she reportedly adopted a new name, Aadya Surve. "Any girl who is enduring such things, please don't endure it. God has not given us life to lose in front of such Ravanas," she said.
Love jihad
She claims her situation was 'love jihad'
Speaking to the media, she alleged, "Definitely love jihad ka mamla hai. Kai log mana karte hain aur bolte hain ki jab maine khud yeh kiya tha, toh aaj kya bolna." "Jab maine yeh decision liya tha, tab itni samajh nahi thi. Main bharose mein, unhe ek achha insaan samajh kar gayi thi. Yeh saari cheezein iss dharm mein zaroor hoti hain."
